I am building a motorized scooter using a chainsaw motor or similar engine. Should I use a Spindle or Chain?
I have an off-road style scooter and I want to attach either a chainsaw or whipper snipper (weed wacker) to motorize it. I was wondering whether i should have a spindle drive (have the shaft running directly onto the wheel with the use of a smaller wheel such as a skateboard or rubber wheel) or a chain drive... I thought that if i had a spindle drive it could clog up with mud etc. as i live on a farm and wanted to drive it on dirt roads. I guess i could just not use it on wet days. I have not bought a motor yet but i want to know from some people who know what they are talking about what would be the best type of engine i could use. I have been thinking a lot about it and I seem to prefer the spindle driven motors as I will be able to lift the shaft off the tyre and slowly stop it.
I don't really know much about motors or this type of machine so it would be good if you could explain your answers... Thankyou
